SESSION TIPS

CLOTHING

Picture
I often get asked what should I wear from 99% of my clients, and I am always happy to assist with this. Below I will include a short list of the most important things to have with you and what not to wear.

My recommendations are:
  • Solid color tops - Extensive patterns, decorations, etc will take the attention away from your face.
  • Well fitted and/or tailored clothes - Loose clothing often times makes you look larger.
  • Avoid low cut tops - The entire shirt is included in the shot so if the cut is too low we need to include more of your body than needed. Headshots need to focus on your face.
  • Long sleeves - Please ensure they are pressed well. Unlike long sleeves, short sleeves tend to misbehave and short sleeves show skin at the edge of a headshot, which may distract from your face.
  • Correct undergarments with your outfit - No bra or bra straps should be visible with your outfit.
  • No See-through tops - Perform a mirror check to see how well the coverage is of the bra and if it works with your top.
  • Vibrant colors - Get more attention, this will depend on your backdrop selection as well so pick something with complementary options.

Hair is a very important part of your headshot. I recommend you add a hair stylist to your headshot if possible.
  • Hair cut's and color: If you get your hair cut and/or colored do it about a week before the session. This is when the hair looks the best and natural.
  • Natural look - Whether you style your hair yourself or work with a professional do not opt for a hair style that you never wear. You want to be the best version of yourself.
  • Hair up - Tying up your hair will slim down your face and your neck.
  • Under control curls - Some curling is good but don't go too crazy with the curls.

MAKE UP

Make-up can make it or break it for your headshot look. Overall, I would recommend not over-doing it and going more for a natural look. We don't want distractions taking attention away from you.

Nobody's skin is perfect. Make-up is supposed to enhance your feature and conceal some imperfections.

Our make-up recommendations:
  • Hire a MUA- Even if you are really good with your own make up hiring a professional that knows what looks the best in camera makes a big difference.
  • Going Natural- Make-up should feel natural for you, especially when you look at yourself in the mirror.

Since a headshot is all about the face real-estate, it's important to get rest, take care of your skin and stay hydrated leading up to your headshot appointment!
  • Stay hydrated - Drink plenty and I mean PLENTY of water the week of your headshot. Water keeps our body and skin happy and hydrated. Try to avoid sugary or soda drinks.
  • Wax a few days before - If you need to wax any hair on your face including your eyebrows, try to make an appointment the week before your headshot. Skin can be very sensitive and can stay red in the waxed areas for a few days. AVOID waxing the day before or the day of your headshot.
  • Treat yourself to a facial - We all love and deserve to be pampered. What better way to treat yourself than to a facial to make sure your skin is beautiful and perfect. If you decide to get a facial, please make sure to get it the week before your headshot. You never know how your skin will react to products and it needs a few days to fully recover.
